The Clockmaker’s Daughter is a mystery that is solved over generations. It begins in London, where the daughter of a clockmaker is found – her father nowhere to be seen. She is raised to be a thief, and in her occupation she finds a dear friend and a lover. While trying to put her past behind her, there is a tragedy, and she mysteriously disappears.
The mystery is unravelled in the present day, by an archivist who finds a mysterious box and attempts to determine the origin of the contents.
The characters are charming. Kate Morton does an amazing job of tying several generations together with the magic of the surrounding landscapes. The descriptions are so rich, you can imagine yourself in the thick of the story. Now picture parts of the story being told by a mysterious narrator, who becomes a beloved companion throughout the book, and you have an atmospheric favorite that stays with you long after the last page.
